Established in honor of Artie Greenspan who retired in the fall of 2017 after forty years at Colby and awarded to a senior who demonstrates the greatest understanding and the deepest intellectual and soulful engagement with the literary texts studied in our courses.

The Efthim Economu Prize for the Top Male French Studies Major
(Awarded to the top male senior who demonstrates superior commitment to the French Studies Major.)
Efthim Economu, born in 1922, was the son of a Greek father and Albanian mother. He spent his childhood and youth in Waterville. In 1940, he enrolled as a Colby student and selected a major in Modern Languages with a focus on French and German. He was elected president of the Maine chapter of the American Association of Teachers of French and named “Maine French Teacher of the Year” in 1957. Economu passed away on January 24, 2017. His estate included a generous bequest to the best graduating majors in German and in French at Colby.
