Internships
Who?
- Students and recent graduates of all nationalities may apply if they are enrolled in or recently graduated from a university in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, Germany, Greece, the Netherlands, Poland, Ukraine and the United States.
What?
- Intensive and demanding, the Humanity in Action Fellowship brings together international groups of university students and recent graduates to explore national histories of discrimination and resistance, as well as examples of issues affecting different minority groups today.
- Our one-year Fellowship program welcomes college and university students and recent graduates from Bosnia and Herzegovina, Denmark, France, Germany, Greece, Poland, the Netherlands, the United States, and Ukraine. Fellows participate in intensive four-week educational programs located in cities across Europe and the United States, with approximately 20 local and international students in each program. Each program provides a site-specific curriculum for understanding the historical and cultural context in which challenges to pluralism and liberal democracy occur. The programs are interdisciplinary, collaborative, and engaged learning experiences; they feature lectures and discussions with researchers, journalists, politicians, activists, and artists, as well as site visits to government agencies, non-profit and community organizations, museums, and cultural and memorial sites. The goal of these programs is to foster cross-cultural understanding and an appreciation of different perspectives and approaches for assessing past and contemporary social justice issues.
After the four-week on-site educational programs, Fellows return to their countries to develop and implement Action Projects to address social justice issues in their own communities. Past Action Projects have ranged from the production of documentaries and theatrical plays to community organizing projects, campaigns and social enterprises. The Action Project implementation stage is not a full-time commitment and is individually completed as the Fellow continues their education or career.
- Graduates of the one-year Fellowship program then are invited to join a transatlantic network of over 2,000 alumni as Senior Fellows. Senior Fellows have developed careers as entrepreneurs, artists, scientists, journalists, researchers, performers, writers and professionals from all disciplines, united by a shared commitment to advancing human rights through civic engagement. Humanity in Action provides Senior Fellows with opportunities for continued learning and engagement through annual international conferences on both sides of the Atlantic, professional Fellowship programs, study tours, grant competitions and more.

New England Historic Genealogical Society
The New England Historic Genealogical Society is partnering with the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Boston to digitize their sacramental records from 1789-1900, largely consisting of baptisms, marriages, and confirmations. These records reflect the various immigrant populations who came to Boston and Eastern Massachusetts including French Canadians from Quebec.
We have a group of over 100 volunteers who index these records to help us create a searchable database on our website, used by genealogists and historical researchers. A set of pages is indexed by one volunteer, proofread by another volunteer, then reviewed one more time before getting posted to our website. We currently need more help with the proofreading step of this process. Proofreaders double check that all information associated with a record is correct–particularly first name, last name, parents’ names, spouse’s name, date, and witnesses’ names.
We’re looking for someone who is flexible and willing to learn, with an eye for small details.
These records take many formats including small paragraphs of French that include written out dates or Latin forms.
You do not need to know Latin for this position, but you need to be willing to learn a few relevant words and phrases–we provide training! You will need to read cursive handwriting, or be willing to learn.
American Ancestors and New England Historic Genealogical Society (NEHGS) is America’s founding genealogical organization and the most respected name in family history. Established in 1845, We are the nation’s leading comprehensive resource for family history research and the largest Society of its kind in the world. We provide expert family history services through our staff, original scholarship, data-rich website, educational opportunities, and research center to help family historians of all levels explore their past and understand their families’ unique place in history.
While we are located in Boston, MA, we welcome remote volunteers and interns.
Contact Molly Rogers ’13, Database Coordinator or Rachel Adams, Database Services Volunteer Coordinator if you are interested. Click here for a downloadable PDF description of this internship.

While promoting an international perspective, coursework and other activities enable students to become linguistically and culturally competent language users who can employ their knowledge and skills for academic and professional purposes as well as for personal enrichment. Internships, Courses, and Residencies in Art in Siena
The Siena Art Institute’s Undergraduate Program is designed for students who are focusing on their artistic development, and are looking for a new setting to pursue their art in a study-abroad experience. The program welcomes artists from all disciplines (painting, photography, video, installation, ceramics, sculpture, printmaking, creative writing and more) who are interested in the intersection of art and civic life, and who wish to explore how our artistic projects can lead to a deeper understanding of the cultures in which we find ourselves. Our undergraduate students are able to spend one or two semesters at the Siena Art Institute honing their skills, exploring their artistic interests, and developing their artistic portfolios.
Our program is intentionally small, allowing students to receive a great deal of individual attention from our faculty to assist in your ongoing portfolio development. Our small classes allow close collaboration between students and faculty. The Siena Art Institute works in close contact with our partner programs such as the Siena School for Liberal Arts, Mason Perkins Deafness Fund, and diverse summer symposia, granting our students unparalleled access to a variety of cultural resources and activities. We encourage our program participants to grow and learn during their time here through a wide range of exciting and innovative courses, as well as community-based art projects, internship opportunities, and cultural experiences.
