Geology is the study of the entire Earth. It’s the ultimate interdisciplinary science combining chemistry, physics, mathematics and modern biology to build understanding of the physical and biological history of the whole planet. Geologists locate virtually all non-biological resources on Earth and lead efforts to understand and mitigate the environmental impacts of human activity. They also study other planetary bodies in our solar system, as seen in recent NASA missions to Mars, Venus, the Moon and Jupiter. Colby geology majors enjoy classroom study and hands-on research experience preparing them for careers or graduate study in this exciting field.
The Geology Department offers a major and a minor for students with varying interests. Students pursuing a career in geology and/or advanced study should choose the major. Those who want to complement another major, are interested in teaching, or discover geology later can opt for the minor. Visit the Geology Page in the Colby College Catalogue to view requirements.
Colby’s Geology Department emphasizes ‘learning by doing.’ All geology majors at Colby complete at least one significant research project before graduating, working closely with faculty mentors to develop new knowledge. Many students present their research at national or regional scientific conferences. Students also commonly publish their research with faculty members in scientific journals.
