PSYCHIATRIC MENTAL HEALTH NURSE PRACTITIONER

Part-Time, 9-Month, Exempt, Salaried, Administrative Staff Appointment

Colby College is an AAAHC accredited student health service providing comprehensive care to students. The psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMH), under general supervision of the director of health services, will function both independently and in collaboration with others to diagnose, treat, and manage psychological health problems and to evaluate the effectiveness of care. The nurse practitioner may be involved with educational activities and integrates relevant research and best practices into caring for students from diverse backgrounds and identities. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Practice within the terms of the Garrison Foster Health Center NP Collaborative Agreement, which defines scope of practice and consultation within Health Services
  • Perform comprehensive psychiatric evaluations including evaluation of behavioral health and medical histories; trauma; history and risk of violence, suicide, and self-harm; substance use; social and developmental history; qualitative and quantitative assessment of functioning; mental status; self-understanding; and motivation for change
  • Order and interpret diagnostic tests as needed
  • Diagnose, evaluate, and treat acute and chronic psychiatric conditions according to a collaborative, defined treatment plan that includes client-centered, measurable goals, and objectives
  • Provide crisis intervention, as needed
  • Collaborate with other members of the Health Services team, Counseling Services, other campus departments, and off-campus providers as needed
  • Document via an Electronic Medical Records System (EMR) and maintain patient records in accordance with established policies and procedures
  • Adapt within the work environment to meet patient or organizational needs (e.g. work schedule and assignment)
  • Attend staff meetings, continuing education in-service programs and other meetings, trainings, or programs as required by College administration
  • Perform quality improvement duties as assigned by the director of health services and/or in collaboration with the Quality and Risk Management Committee
  • Serve on health services committees as appointed by the director of health services
  • Use non clinical time to support activities that enhance the health and wellness of Colby students as well as improve the visibility and credibility of the Health Services on campus and in the greater community, including but not limited to health education programs, accreditation activities, campus committees, residence hall/campus presentations and/or other opportunities as agreed upon in collaboration with the director of health services; activities may fall outside normal office hours
  • Perform additional duties as assigned; duties, responsibilities, and activities may change at any time with or without notice
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Graduate from an accredited college or university-based Nursing Practitioner Program and certification by Psychiatric and Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Board; Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner in the state of Maine
  • Nurse practitioner with a minimum of three to five years of psychiatric experience in an outpatient setting; experience in a college health and counseling setting and/or with late adolescents/young adults strongly preferred
  • Prescriptive authority issued by the Maine State Board of Nursing
  • Current DEA controlled substance registration
  • Evidence of current Basic Life Support Certification (CPR)
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively with physicians, nurses, athletic trainers, and support staff within the health center as well as staff from various departments on campus
  • Talent to communicate with students and parents in a clear concise compassionate manner

  • Ability to work independently and as a member of a team, establish priorities, and work collaboratively as a member of a diverse community
KEY RELATIONSHIPS:
Reporting to the director of health services, this position interacts with students, faculty, staff, and outside constituencies.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
General health and medical services environment. Position involves frequent movement; some lifting (up to 50 pounds) required. Computer usage involving repetitive hand/wrist motion is necessary. Routine occupational exposure to blood or body fluids. Verification of Hepatitis B, MMR, and varicella immunity status due to potential exposure to communicable diseases.
