Connecting to the Colby Network - Windows 2000/XP

  1. Connect an ethernet cable to your computer. Plug the other end into the jack in the communications box in your room. (An ethernet jack looks like an extra-wide phone jack)
  2. Turn on your computer.
  3. Click Start -> Run
  4. Type inetwiz
  5. Click OK. The Internet Connection Wizard Screen will start.
  6. Select  - Connect using my local area network (LAN). Click Next.
  7. Check  - Automatic discovery of proxy server [recommended]. Uncheck everything else. Click Next.
  8. Select - No to setup an Internet mail account. Click Next. Click Finish.

  • Note to DSL/home users  - Some services you might use at home change your settings in such a way that your system does NOT automatically recognize your Colby on-campus configuration when you return. If this happens, try the following:
    • Right click on My Network Places on the desktop -> Properties.
    • Right-click on Local Area Connection -> Properties
    • On the General tab, scroll down to Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)
    • Click Properties
    • Select - Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically.
    • Click Ok twice.

If you still cannot connect to the network try the following:

    • Click Start -> Programs -> Accessories -> Command Prompt
    • Type ipconfig /renew
