Borthwick receives funding to study Roman sculpture

Assistant Professor of Art Bradley Borthwick received research funds from the Colby Humanities Division Grant to travel to Rome in summer 2014. Borthwick, a sculptor, explored the streetscapes, forum sites, and museums of Rome, exploring the apparent differences in value granted to carved stone remnants and the institutional collection of stone statuary. He was particularly interested in why one format (representational sculpture) has engaged the formal archive while the other (architectural detailing) lays in heaps throughout the city, and what that says about the society that claims these items as its own. Borthwick brought his observations home in a record of drawings and photographs, which are now informing a new body of sculptural work.
