Sheehan speaks at photography symposium in Prato, Italy
Associate Professor and Chair of Art Tanya Sheehan will speak at “Photography and Its Publics,” a symposium on April 14-15, 2016 held in Prato, Italy. Organized by Monash University, University of Aberdeen, and Durham University, the event focuses on the contributions that photography makes to the production and meaning of the public sphere. The symposium includes a dozen photography scholars from around the world. Sheehan will present a paper titled, “Selfies with Sutbtlety: Racial Stereotype as Public Performance,” which links Kara Walker’s 2014 installation at the Domino Sugar Factory and the photography it inspired to a long history of representing race in American photographic humor.
