WATERVILLE, Maine ---- Colby College senior John Gilboy (Thornton Academy/Saco, Maine) was named to the Capital One Academic All-District 1 Football Team on Wednesday.

Gilboy, who is now eligible for the Capital One Academic All-America Team, earned New England Small College Athletic Conference (NESCAC) Second Team honors for the second straight year as a right guard. Gilboy, a co-captain for the Mules, also saw time on the defensive line.

Gilboy had earned all-district honors for track and field last spring. He was the top thrower for the Mules and a captain for both the indoor and outdoor teams. Gilboy will be throwing again this winter and spring.

Gilboy, a Chemistry: Biochemistry major, has been on the NESCAC All-Academic Team seven times over the past three years. He is the TEAM IMPACT On Campus Ambassador to help pair chronically ill children with sports teams on campus. Gilboy also is a Student Athletic Advisory Committee (SAAC) member, is a member of Colby's Male Athletes Against Violence (MAAV), and is on the Football Leadership Council.

Just before he came to Colby, Gilboy earned the prestigious National Football Foundation (NFF) High School Scholar-Athlete Award in New York City. Just five high school players across the country were honored. Gilboy went on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic and volunteered at a hospital organized to serve Haitian immigrants.
