Men's basketball drops local battle with Thomas

WATERVILLE, Maine --- Despite 18 points from first-year Sam Willson, the Colby College men's basketball team fell 88-83 to local rival Thomas College in non-conference play Tuesday night.

Colby drops to 2-4 overall heading into an away non-conference game against Bowdoin College on Friday at 7 p.m.

Luke Westman added 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting for the Mules. The first-year player is shooting 63 percent (22-for-35) from the field in the opening six games and leads Colby in scoring at 10.7 a contest.

Willson racked up his 18 points on 7-for-13 shooting from the field in 14 minutes of action. Danny Chase had a 6-for-6 effort from the foul line and contributed 11 points, while Patrick Stewart had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds (5 offensive). Chris Hudnut added 10 rebounds to go along with seven points. 

Colby had a huge 53-35 advantage on the boards, but the Mules had 24 turnovers in the game. The Terriers turned the ball over just 13 times and had 13 steals in the game. Thomas also had a 13-2 advantage in made 3-point shots.

Levi Barnes paced Thomas with 18 points and made four of his eight 3-point shots. Stanley Greene, Jr. added 13 points and Shaun Munson finished with 11 for Thomas (4-1 overall). Eric Westbrooks had nine points, six rebounds, four assists, and three steals. 

The game was tied at 16-16 when Thomas pulled out to a lead of 11 points at 36-25 when KJ Ottley nailed a 3-point shot with 4:47 to halftime. The Mules, though, went on a 10-4 run the rest of the way and trailed 40-35 at the break.

Thomas pushed the lead up to 50-42 with 15:44 left on a basket by Garen Manzo. Colby fought back again with a 9-0 run to take the lead for the last time at 51-50 with 12:51 remaining. Westman had four of the nine points in the run.

The Terriers went on a 6-0 run to take a 56-51 lead and pushed the margin to 68-59 on a 3-point shot by Manzo with 8:09 to play. 

Colby's third stab at a comeback cut the Thomas margin to three points at 70-67 on a Willson basket with 5:14 left. Barnes followed with another big 3-point shot for the Terriers, who pushed the margin to 81-71 with 2:55 to go. Colby got the lead down to 87-83 after Stewart scored inside with 11 seconds remaining, but Greene, Jr. hit one free throw and the Mules missed on a 3-point shot with five seconds to play.
