Men's basketball falls short at Bowdoin

BRUNSWICK, Maine --- The Colby College men's basketball team led by six points with 6:17 left in the game, but only managed five points the rest of the way as Bowdoin College battled back for a 64-58 win Friday night.

The Mules drop to 2-5 overall and will play at Bates College on Saturday at 4 p.m., while Bowdoin improves to 5-2 overall. This contest did not count toward the NESCAC standings.

Sam Willson finished with a team-high 17 points and was the lone Mule in double figures. Chris Hudnut added nine points, eight rebounds, and three assists. Connor O'Neil chipped in seven points, while Shane Rogers, Danny Chase, and Gordon Fischer all had six points. Rogers led the Mules in assists with four.

Bowdoin had four players in double figures, led by Keegan Pieri's 22 points, six rebounds, and three blocked shots. Bryan Hurley added 15 points, seven rebounds, and five assists. Matt Mathias and Maximilian Staiger both had 10 points.

Colby opened up a 47-38 lead when Willson hit one of his two free throw attempts with 9:10 left in the game. Bowdoin cut the margin to 49-47, but O'Neil hit a jumper and Rogers hit two free throws to make it 53-47 with 6:17 remaining.

After a Willson jumper made it a 56-54 Colby lead with 4:06 remaining, Bowdoin scored the next six points to take control. Andrew Madlinger hit a 3-point shot with 3:50 to play to give the Polar Bears the lead for good. Staiger hit three free throws to put Bowdoin up 60-56. Luke Westman hit a basket for Colby with 2:22 to make it 60-58 with 2:16 to play, but Bryan Hurley nailed a big jumper with 50 seconds to play and later added two free throws.

The statistics were very similar, with both teams at 12 turnovers and 20 fouls. The Polar Bears had a slight 42-27 margin on the boards, while Colby had one more made free throw (17-16).
