AMHERST, Mass. --- Colby College's Harry Smith (Locust Valley, N.Y.) went 1-1 in national tourney play at the College Squah Association's Individual Singles Championships on Friday at Amherst College.
Smith had a fine day after opening play with a 3-0 (11-6, 12-10, 11-8) win against Bowdoin College's Barrett Takesian in the first round in the Molloy Division (players ranked 33 to 64 in the country).
Smith was foced into a tough match with third-seeded Omar Sobhy in the second round. Sobhy won the Molloy Division singles title a year ago. Smith took the first game by an 11-6 count and then fell 11-5 in the second game. The all-important third game went to Sobhy in tough 16-14 triumph. He then went on to an 11-1 win in the fourth game to take the match.
Smith heads into consolation round play Saturday at 10:40 a.m.
