Volleyball—History

The volleyball team became a varsity sport at Colby in 1991 after previously being a club program.

In its 20-year history the team won Colby's first NESCAC team tournament title in any sport, earned six Maine State Championships, been NESCAC runner-up once, and received one Eastern College Athletic Conference Tournament bid.

The 2005 team was the most celebrated, earning the program's first NCAA Division III Tournament bid and finishing the season ranked 19th in the country after going 37-4 overall and 10-0 in the NESCAC. The Mules won the NESCAC tourney title at Wadsworth Gymnasium and then won the NCAA New England Regional title in front of 1,100 fans in a home victory over Tufts University.

Outside hitter Cait Cleaver '06 (Kennett Square, Pa.), who had her uniform number retired in 2010, was the first Colby player to make one of the three All-America teams. She earned that status after the 2005 season and was the NESCAC Player of the Year. Kaitlin Adams '06 (Athol, Mass.) earned honorable mention All-America honors and was on the NESCAC first team along with Cleaver. Kendall Kirby '07 (Piedmont, Calif.) was the NESCAC Defensive Player of the Year from her libero position.

Outside hitter Jackie Bates '98 (Spokane, Wash.) first put the program on the map with her incredible all-around abilities. For her accomplishments, Bates was the first volleyball player to have her jersey retired.

Colby had four straight 20-plus win seasons in 2002, 2003, 2004, and 2005.

In 2003, senior setter Kimberly Prescott and sophomore outside hitter Cait Cleaver were the first Colby players selected to the American Volleyball Coaches Association Regional All-American Team in 2003.
