Colby on the Road Networking Mule it Over Career Center Zipcar

Colby on the Road

Each year the Career Center organizes “on the road” trips to destinations around the country centered around exploring a group of career options. Examples of past trips have included exploring “Communication and Publishing” careers in New York City, “Consulting and Business” careers in Toronto, Canada, “Public Policy” careers in Washington DC, and annually we host our largest off-campus event “Paving the Road to a Future in Finance” in Boston.

It takes all hands to create these events. We collaborate across many Colby departments, and along side alumni and parents to organize trips. Our Toronto trip was a collaboration between Colby College and the University of Chicago. Our finance event in Boston brings together around 75 students with over 150 alumni and parent volunteers. The Washington DC trip was planned in conjunction with the Goldfarb Center for Public Affairs and Civic Engagement.

Aside from “Paving the Road” which averages around 75 participants, most Colby on the Road trips have 15-25 students, feature stops at various company locations where they meet with alumni, parents, and company recruiters to learn about opportunities in the industry, get advice about how to best position themselves for employment, and interact with contacts in the industry. Meetings can range from panels, to structured networking, to lunch or dinner conversation. Stops during the trip may be exclusive to one company, or feature participants from across many companies that share a job function or industry. We also (when possible) plan multiple “tracks” to one destination. New York City typically features two tracks of 20 students, each with its own focus on an industry group.

Colby College supports student travel to these events through travel stipends or chartered bus transportation. The best dates for “on the road” events are during breaks, so we target Fall Break (mid-October), end of JanPlan (last Friday in January) and Spring Break (mid-March).

On the Road events are meant to bring students on-location to the places and people they need to connect to while exploring career options. Some trips may be focused to certain class years, but are generally open to all majors. Alumni, parents, faculty and employer partners interested in learning more about participating in a Colby on the Road event are encouraged to reach out to us at for more information.
