Honorary Degree Citation
Andrea Nix Fine. Documentary filmmaker. Oscar, Emmy, and Sundance award winner. You made your first documentary during your last semester at Colby and discovered, you said, that filmmaking just made you spark. After graduation in 1991, you went to work immediately in the industry you loved, eventually landing at National Geographic as a videographer. The assignments were challenging, exciting, and sometimes even dangerous, and they gave you an extraordinary opportunity to hone your skills. At National Geographic you also met your husband, gifted cinematographer Sean Fine, with whom you have forged a life and creative partnership yielding remarkable achievements in documentary filmmaking. You have traveled to more than 30 countries to bring unknown human stories to the screen. Inocente, your portrait of a homeless 15-year-old artist depicted in the vibrant colors of her paintings and in your spirit-raising style, brought you your first Oscar, in 2013. War/Dance won two Emmys and was also nominated for an Oscar. Your filmmaking balances the courage to brave uncomfortable situations and dangerous places with a transcendent sensitivity that honors the beauty, strength, and dignity of young war orphans in Uganda, of a homeless teenager in California, and, in your most recent feature, Life According to Sam, of a young boy with a rare and fatal disease. Committed to advancing social justice, you have stayed true to what you see as the mission of documentary: to give voice to the forgotten. Your films underscore the strength and power of the human spirit, and they urge upon all of us the moral imperative to care for one another.
By the authority of the Board of Trustees of Colby College, I confer upon you, Andrea Nix Fine, the degree of Doctor of Fine Arts, honoris causa. The hood with which you have been invested and this diploma which I place in your hand are the visible symbols of your membership in this society of scholars, to all the rights and privileges of which I declare you entitled.
