Honorary Degree Citation
Peter G. Vigue. Business leader. Change agent. Champion of Maine worker safety. A graduate of the Maine Maritime Academy, you began your career at the Cianbro Companies more than 40 years ago, not in the executive suite but as a day laborer. You rose through the ranks to chairman of the board, president, and CEO—and Cianbro rose with you, from a small civil and heavy industrial construction outfit to one of the largest and most admired companies of its kind in North America. Cianbro now operates in more than 15 states and provides excellent jobs in Maine. Under your leadership Cianbro has won national awards for its dedication to workplace safety and the promotion of employee wellness, and you led the process that placed ownership of Cianbro in the hands of its employees. You are known in the business community as a man whose word is as good as his bond. Your fundamental belief that success for Maine involves a triad of education, entrepreneurship, and attention to the needs and dignity of workers has been the cornerstone of Cianbro’s—and your own—success. Your sagacity in matters of engineering, business, and the welfare of our state led the last three governors to seek your advice, and organizations as diverse as the Boy Scouts of America, TD Bank, the Maine Community Foundation, and the Maine Economic Research Institute have tapped your expertise as a member of their boards. You represent the very best of Maine, and Colby is proud to honor you today.
By the authority of the Board of Trustees of Colby College, I confer upon you, Peter G. Vigue, the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa. The hood with which you have been invested and this diploma which I place in your hand are the visible symbols of this society of scholars, to all the rights and privileges of which I declare you eligible.
