Militarizing the Police: Race, Empire and the Global Color Line
Featuring: Julian Go, University of Chicago
This talk offers an historical sociology of militarized policing in the US and the UK. It shows that the history of police is inextricably tethered to the history of empire and the global color line. From their very birth, modern “civil” police have repeatedly appropriated military equipment, forms and mindsets from imperial frontiers in response to perceived racialized threats at home conceived as analogous to threats in colonial spaces of counter-insurgency. A colonial approach, along with its militarized mindset, has thereby been baked into the very core of modern policing.
