Course Materials for GE254:

Global warming is threatening northern communities particularly severely. This 2005 photo shows thermal erosion of ice-rich permafrost in northwestern Alaska as sea water literally melts the coastal bluffs back. Unfortunately, the community of Shishmaref, Alaska, sits atop these bluffs. It is estimated that residents have at most another 10 years before the village will have to be relocated, at a cost of $180-$200 million; a seawall to protect the town has already cost over $6 million. In other areas of the Alaskan coast, thermal retreat has eroded inland by more than 10 meters (over 30 feet) per year!
Principles of Geomorphology

These presentations (in Microsoft PowerPoint) are made available solely for the use of students in GE254: Principles of Geomorphology, at Colby College. These are the actual presentations made in class, sometimes augmented slightly to enhance the materials. However, nothing of substance will be added to materials once they have been presented in class without notifying the entire class that such a change has been made.
In order to view these, you will need to download them onto a computer capable of running Microsoft PowerPoint. Colby users not having this software may download it from the general server.
Basic lecture PowerPoints are saved in the old (ppt) format; virtually all student PowerPoint presentations are in the new (pptx) format. If anyone has trouble opening files in this new format, he/she should get in touch with me about arranging a conversion.
