BILL AND JOAN ALFOND MAIN STREET COMMONS
The Bill and Joan Alfond Main Street Commons is a living and learning community that offers apartment-style residences in the heart of downtown Waterville.
Opening in fall 2018, it will be home to 200 Colby students, faculty, and staff who are deeply engaged in our city, while also serving and supporting a variety of business, civic, and community organizations.
The new Program for Civic Engagement and Community Partnerships at Alfond Commons will build relationships among the community, civic partners, and Colby faculty, staff, and students.
Installed by Maine Solar Engineering, the solar panels on the Schair-Swenson-Watson Alumni Center (SSWAC) have a generating capacity of 25.76 kW and are expected to produce 33,000 kWh annually. This electric output will provide 10 to 15 percent of the alumni center’s annual energy consumption. In the installation’s first week of operation, the panels reduced the average daily consumption of the building by 35 percent. SSWAC is electrically heated and cooled through the use of geothermal heat pumps. All of the electricity generated by the panels will be used in the building.
Finished in July 2017, Colby’s 5,300-panel solar array, located less than a mile from campus, fulfills ~16% of Colby’s electricity needs. Our living commitment to environmental sustainability – from construction of a biomass plant to recycling and food waste reduction efforts to building solar facilities – has informed and strengthened our academic efforts.
Colby’s sustainability efforts for dining services began in 2000. In 2016, Colby chose Bon Appétit Management Co. as its new campus dining provider. “Bon Appétit chefs cook from scratch, including all their sauces, stocks, and soups. The company was an early leader in local sourcing of foods, launching its Farm to Fork program back in 1999.”
COLBY ORGANIC FARMERS AND GROWERS ASSOCIATION
COFGA, the Colby Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association, is a club where students can manage Colby’s organic “2 Feet 2 Bedrock” garden and greenhouse, work with the community (at Colby and beyond) on projects regarding sustainable food and agriculture, and meet new people! COFGA is a great way to work with produce, learn about sustainable farming practices, and provide Colby students and Waterville residents with fresh produce. COFGA is always open to new student members and community partners! COFGA aims “…to provide quality, organic produce to Colby’s dining halls, instill in our members the knowledge necessary to grow their own food, and establish partnerships with the Colby and Waterville community.”
Colby’s Entrepreneurship Expo is the culmination of a year’s worth of entrepreneurship programming, complete with lectures, Jan Plan courses, and workshops, and provides students who enter the pitch competition with the experts, mentors, and resources to turn their ideas into full-fledged businesses.
COLBY ALLIANCE FOR RENEWABLE ENERGY
The Colby Alliance for Renewable Energy (C.A.R.E.) aims to mobilize the students and administration of Colby College to work together for a sustainable energy future.
COLBY VOLUNTEER CENTER
The Colby Volunteer Center facilitates student engagement with the greater Waterville area by building a strong, united community. In acknowledging the natural connection between Colby and the surrounding area, the CVC provides an avenue through which students are able to solidify their positions within the community. The CVC sponsors fund raisers and one-time service events such as the Children’s Halloween Extravaganza and Colby Cares Day, and it oversees 15 volunteer programs such as Adults Reading to Children, Boys and Girls Club, Paw Pals, Soup Kitchen, Colby Companions, and Rape Crisis. Starting fall 2018, the CVC will be located in the Bill and Joan Alfond Main Street Commons.
EcoReps are students who have a passion for sustainability and are interested in creating change. Representatives educate their peers on sustainable living practices, organize and execute waste diversion efforts local to their dorm, plan sustainability-related events throughout the year, communicate and market campus environmental activities, engage in campus-related sustainability research, and act as a sustainable living example for their community. With the direct support of the College sustainability coordinator and with assistance from a variety of campus stakeholders, the EcoReps implement projects to improve sustainability efforts campus-wide.
EnviroCo is a student run environmental coalition on campus that seeks to educate Colby students and the local Waterville community about current environmental issues. EnviroCo sponsors a number of events throughout the year to bring the student body together and spread awareness about environmental news headlines. Through activism, members of EnviroCo have helped Colby become a more sustainable and green campus.
Beginning in 2008, students initiated the iBike program to offer free bike loans to students and employees. The motivation was to provide sustainable transportation and equitable access to downtown Waterville, as well as an opportunity for healthy exercise. Colby’s iBikes can be found throughout campus at their Bluetooth locking stations and can be unlocked through the Movatic app, allowing 6 hours of use. There are bike racks at every campus building for both iBIkes and personal bikes, and there are bike racks in Downtown Waterville.
LEARNING BY GIVING
Colby College is proud to be among a select group of colleges and universities to have offered students a unique course in experiential philanthropy. The Learning by Giving Foundation provides funding that enables students to make grants to local nonprofits.
In the course, students worked with local nonprofits, learning the nonprofit grant-writing process and the skills they need to become successful philanthropists. The grant in support of this work was provided by the Learning by Giving Foundation and a Colby alumnus.
