SMALL TOWN, BIG IMPACT: STUDENTS LEARN STUDENTS VOTE COALITION GRANT FOR ASK EVERY STUDENT IMPLEMENTATION
The Student’s Learn Students Vote Coalition is a national hub and the largest nonpartisan network in the country dedicated to increasing student voter participation.
The Ask Every Student program poses the question: “What would it take to ask every student on your campus about participating in our democracy?” Using the framework that full student voter participation comes from integrating person-to-person vote registration into exiisting processes, such as orientation or classes that reach all students. Every campus has different challenges, opportunities, and context to craete a program that asks every student about their democratic engagement plan. Ask Every Student seeks to create processes, systems, and tools to answer this question by collaborating with leaders at institutions who are working to make full participation a reality.
This implementation grant with Colby helps to strengthen and expand our institution’s democratic engagement efforts by training and supporting student fellows and civic action teams, implementing peer-to-peer outreach plans, registering students to vote, hosting voter education, and organizing GOTV programming. Colby Votes is a student-led action team that will drive many democratic engagement activites and is composed of Maine Students Vote Fellows, Captain Organizers, and Student Voting Captains. All three of these student leadership positions coordinate and mobilize Student Voting Squads through a civic ladder of engagement– 1) register to vote, 2) sign a pledge to vote, 3) make a voter plan, 4) send election reminders, and 5) cast their ballot.
