Colby Students Earn LEED for Green Associate Credential

During January Colby’s Sustainability Office offered a LEED for Green Associate course for interested students, faculty, and staff, and two students who took the course already passed the exam and are working on green building projects for the College.

The course covered introductory information about the United States Green Building Council (USGBC), explored the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) rating systems, and investigated the benefits of green building using Colby projects as examples.

Afterward Erik Douds ’14 and Sola Zheng ’17 sat for and passed the accreditation exam in March. That achievement and their certification are a testament to their passion for green building and interest in sustainability, according to Colby Sustainability Coordinator Kevin Bright, who noted that they completed the course for no credit and on top of their existing course load.

The Sustainability Office has put them to work on some LEED documentation for campus projects, and they are already developing real-world skills in the green building field.
