Subject: Wireless Network Expansion and a Policy Change
Wireless Network Expansion in the Residence Halls and an Associated Policy
The wireless network in the residence halls is being expanded over the
summer. By the opening of the fall semester, every room in every residence
hall at Colby will have wireless network coverage. The wired network ports
will continue to be available to provide much higher bandwidth than is
possible with the wireless network.
The following change in policy is being made:
Personal wireless hubs will not be permitted in the residence halls after
Aug. 1, 2007. These devices interfere with the installed wireless access
points and, besides, they will no longer be needed.
We also have some recommendations:
Cordless telephones that operate in the 2.4 GHz radio frequency (this is the
most common type of cordless phone) may disrupt the wireless network
connections of nearby computers. If you are buying a new cordless phone, we
recommend ones that use the 5.8 GHz frequency region. Microwave ovens may
also emit radio waves in the 2.4 GHz range. If you experience sudden loss
of wireless network access, these are possible sources of interfering radio
waves that you should explore.
If you have any questions about the plans for wireless network installation
or policies, please contact me (phone 4209 or email Ray.Phillips@colby.edu).
