The Colby community gathered on the lawn of Lorimer Chapel Sept. 4 to kick off the academic year. Students, including the 585 members of the Class of 2022, were welcomed by President David A. Greene, who recounted parts of the College’s rich history, including the story of freed slave and Colby janitor Samuel Osborne, whose daughter Marion was Colby’s first female African-American graduate in 1900. Crawford Family Professor of Religion Nikky-Guninder K. Singh delivered the convocation address, noting that in today’s polarized and increasingly intolerant world, a liberal arts education, with its emphasis on understanding of different cultures and perspectives, is needed more than ever.
