On Tuesday, July 23, the Yankee Brass Band will begin its annual summer concert tour with a performance in Colby’s Lorimer Chapel on the Waterville campus. The 8 p.m. event is open to the public without charge, and donations are accepted.
Founded in 1986, the Yankee Brass Band is a historically accurate recreation of an 1840-1870 American brass band. The concert program will include 19th-century quicksteps, gallops, polkas, mazurkas, schottisches and waltzes. The Yankee Brass Band performs music on original instruments of the period, including the keyed bugle and the ophicleide, which are no longer manufactured. The musicians also wear reproductions of firemen’s shirts and kepis, common attire for brass bands of the 1800s. The Yankee Brass Band features musicians from around the country, and the Colby concert marks the start of the band?s weeklong tour through New England.
