On Tuesday, August 26, and Tuesday, September 2, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Colby College will hold a yard sale featuring used household items collected from student residence halls at the end of the school year. The event is open to the public and will be held in the field house of the Harold Alfond Athletic Center on the Waterville campus. Items for sale will include lamps, dishes, clocks, refrigerators, shelving, sporting goods and more.
The yard sale is sponsored by the Colby group RESCUE (Recycle Everything! Save Colby’s Usable Excess). Established in the 2001-02 school year by faculty, students and staff, RESCUE collected a tractor trailer full of reusable household items from students departing campus in the spring. Items were sorted and cleaned and some were donated to local charities this summer. Proceeds from the yard sales will help support the RESCUE program.
This year RESCUE was recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency, which included a description of the program in a “best management practices” catalog on the EPA Web site (www.epa.gov/ne/assistance/univ/bmpcasestudies.html). The catalog was designed to help institutions with pollution prevention, resource conservation and environmental stewardship.
