Sam Schwehm ’17, recipient of the Boothbay Region Student Aid Fund’s Ralph and Gertrude Karger Music Scholarship, has been playing piano since the third grade and continues to fine-tune his talent at Colby during his free time. Schwehm studied with Gertrude Karger, one of the Boothbay region’s most renowned teachers, for six years until Karger passed away in 2008. Ever proud of Schwehm’s musical aptitude, she entrusted him with her Mason and Hamlin piano at the conclusion of her 80-year teaching career. Karger’s legacy lives on through Schwehm’s commitment to music, both as a pianist and as a composer.
