Andy King ’99 returned to his hometown of Providence on Feb. 15 to sign his recent cookbook, Baking By Hand (Page Street Publishing, 2013), at Books on the Square in Wayland Square. After graduating Colby with a degree in music, King decided to become a chef, and attended the New England Culinary Institute. It was there that he met his wife, Jackie. The pair moved to Portland, Me. to pursue baking, and trained at the Standard Baking Co. In 2006, King and his wife opened A&J King Artisan Bakers in Salem, Mass., named one of America’s 50 Best Bakeries by The Daily Meal (2013). He brings many of the bakery’s recipes into the home in Baking By Hand, emphasizing the benefits of baking without the use of electric mixers. Instead, King points out the usefulness of “knowing your kitchen,” its warm corners and cool corners.
