Members of Colby’s LBGTQ-plus-allies support group, The Bridge, organized a conference focused on how gays are portrayed in the media and in modern culture. One of the organizers, Andy Kang ’15, said that examining “how the media portrays or represents, or tries to represent, or fails to represent, people who don’t fit into mainstream culture” is important because it can help remind people that other viewpoints and experiences exist. Conversations at the conference, including presentations by students, current and former Colby faculty, and noted queer scholar Jack Halberstam, covered athletic environments, video games, and churches’ roles in social-justice efforts.
