An awards ceremony May 5 in Lorimer Chapel recognized students’ academic achievements and contributions to Colby. College-wide and department awards were presented by department and program chairs and other faculty members, and other honors were presented by deans.

The ceremony, now in its sixth year, included announcements of the senior class speaker, Omari G. Matthew ’14, chosen by members of his class to speak at commencement, and the Charles Bassett Senior Class Teaching Award, presented to Professor of Government Guilain Denoeux, who will give the Last Lecture May 19.

The dramatic climax was the Condon Medal, the only student award presented at commencement. Recipient Justin Owumi ’14 received a standing ovation and was surprised when named, and he was surprised a second time when he turned around from shaking President Bro Adams’s hand to see his mother in the aisle.
