Oak Fellow Clare Byarugaba, a Ugandan gay rights activist, met with a group of students at Waterville High School on Oct. 20 to discuss her experience facing discrimination in her home country and learn about the high school community’s efforts to promote tolerance. Many of the students at the meeting belonged to STAND (Students Taking Action Negotiating Diversity), an alliance between gay and straight students.

The meeting took place on the first day of Ally Week, a national movement for young people to become allies against LGBT discrimination. Waterville High School participated in the movement by organizing activities and games to challenge stereotypes and designating Friday as Color Day, a day for students to wear colors of the rainbow in support.
