In a Jan. 5 article about Lovejoy Award winner James Risen’s refusal to answer questions that could help the Department of Justice identify his confidential sources, New York Times reporter Matt Apuzzo ’00 quoted Risen’s speech at Colby’s 2014 Lovejoy Convocation.

“If you took away all the things that the press revealed to begin with in the war on terror, you would know virtually nothing about the history of the last 13 years,” Risen said in his Oct. 5 speech in Lorimer Chapel. Risen added that the government was less likely to prosecute leaks of classified information that reflected positively on the U.S. government, such as the successful mission to kill Osama bin Laden.
