Swim coach Franco Pacheco recently published an opinion piece on SwimSwam, a popular website for swimming news, in which he discusses racial issues in the swimming community. Pacheco notes that minorities who participate in the sport often feel like “outsiders looking in,” explaining that blacks and Latinos are not widely present in the swimming community and that those who do participate may face emotional obstacles when competing in a predominantly white setting. Pacheco notes that while it is difficult to discuss the issue of race in swimming, “to be open about [race] is the only way to promote growth and development.” He champions the idea that minority coaches and athletes in the swimming world should actively reach out to minorities of the younger generations and make them feel welcome in the sport.
