Assistant Professor of Sociology Victoria Mayer published an opinion piece in the Bangor Daily News concerning Maine Governor Paul LePage’s plan to cut personal and corporate income taxes and eliminate estate taxes. She argues that this attempt to attract corporate investors and stimulate economic development is “a short-sighted gamble that would deprive government of the revenues and administrative capacities needed to respond to residents’ needs and future market developments.” Mayer also states that the negative effects of the policy will reach Maine’s economy, standard of living, and democratic institutions. She suggests an alternative to the policy that involves government investments that advance citizens’ abilities to pursue their own goals.
