Arey Professor of Biosciences Herb Wilson published a column April 12 discussing the atmosphere as a resource “subjected to the tragedy of the commons,” which is the conflict between self-interest and group-interest in the use of a shared resource.

“Our atmosphere is a shared resource,” Wilson wrote, “and all humans, to different degrees, are treating it selfishly.”

He advocates for “green birding”—choosing to bird in locations within walking or biking distance or only short drives away rather than driving longer distances and releasing fossil fuel emissions.

The article generated discussion on the MAINE Birds Facebook page.
