Catherine Besteman was quoted in a Portland Press Herald story on the death of a Lewiston, Maine, man’s brother who was killed in the recent bombing in Somalia. Besteman, the Bartlett Professor of Anthropology, knew the dead man as a child when she lived and studied in Somalia in 1988. The boy was “super smart, totally engaging,” Besteman said in the Oct. 16 story. People like him who returned to Somalia represent the country’s best hope, she told the Press Herald. They are people who are working to make a life while trying to avoid violence “like the bomb that took his life,” Besteman said. “What happened is a horrific tragedy.”
