Associate Professor of Government Walter Hatch wrote an op-ed for Monkey Cage, a Washington Post blog. Titled “Cornel West accused Ta-Nehisi Coates of being a neoliberal. Does neoliberal still mean anything?” Hatch’s op-ed defines the concept neoliberalism, which he says “is now abused so routinely that its actual meaning has become all but lost to the general public, and even to many in academia.” Hatch, who is also director of the Oak Institute for Human Rights, goes on to say that, “Neoliberalism is a rejection of the American liberalism that was born in the early 20th century,” then gives examples of how the concept is used incorrectly and “stretched” in today’s discourse.
