Charles A. Dana Professor of Sociology Neil Gross penned an op-ed for the New York Times titled “Why is Hollywood so Liberal” in advance of the Oscars. “It’s award season in Hollywood, and it looks like the big winner will be progressive politics,” Gross wrote Jan. 27, then tries to explain why actors are liberal, offering several reasons, including educational levels and union membership. Gross also explores another explanation: empathy, noting “that the emotional requirements of acting are conducive to progressive politics.”
