Chandra Bhimull, associate professor of anthropology and African-American studies, was asked to write an essay for New York University Press’s From the Square blog, which she titled “In Black Panther and Wakanda, extraordinary possibilities are realized.” Bhimull, an anthropologist and historian who has “researched and written about race and flight in the black Atlantic world for nearly two decades,” has an interest in the portrayal of air travel in the film. Her essay discusses the film’s aircraft, focusing on the final battle scene and how she felt about what she was seeing, which unsettled her, “especially in regard to the depiction of the complex politics of global blackness,” she writes.
