Robert Gastaldo, the Whipple-Coddington Professor of Geology, was featured prominently in an Undark story about research in South Africa’s Karoo region. Gastaldo has been researching the South African region where the end-Permian extinction is reported, and this story looks at what researchers are discovering in the rocks. “’If the marine and continental biota collapsed simultaneously, or even a little out of phase with each other, we need to know if that model is true,’ Gastaldo said. And detecting if it is true or not, he explains, is the only way we can envision what might happen in our own time. ‘I live on land. I’m concerned about what happens to where I live,’” the story reports.
