Professor of Education Adam Howard conducted a Q&A with Vox regarding the confrontation between a Native elder and Kentucky teenager Nick Sandmann. There has been “increasingly contentious public conversation around the episode,” Vox wrote, and Howard says we may be missing the point. “The student’s behavior was the embodiment of privilege,” Howard told Vox, “and nothing that came after the initial viral video changes that.” Howard, an expert in the culture of elite public schools, said that what’s problematic about the entire situation is “that we easily dismiss things that need to be discussed. People are trying to find holes in the original narrative, and as soon as they find those holes, then that gives us permission to not discuss what we need to be discussing.”

Howard’s Q&A was also referenced in a Jan. 23 article on Fortune.com.
