Bio

Annie Kloppenberg’s creative and theoretical research hinges on improvisation and investigates pedagogies of choreography. She teaches and performs nationally with the Improvisational trio Like You Mean It (www.lymitrio.com) and has presented her collaborative performance, workshop, paper, and structure for making a dance Foreword/Afterword (www.forewordafterword.com) internationally, most recently in Athens, Greece, Istanbul, Turkey, and at The IDCODE Symposium at Impulstanz in Vienna, Austria. She regularly presents scholarly papers at academic conferences and has published articles in the Dance Chronicle and Kinebago, and her work has appeared in Dance Magazine. She is the co-founder and curator of the Moving Target Boston class series and concert (www.movingtargetboston.wordpress.com)

Recent choreographic commissions and residencies include Colby College, The Boston Dance Alliance Rehearsal & Retreat Fellowship, Summer Stages Dance at Concord Academy & ICA Boston, The Boston Center for the Arts, Dance Theater Workshop’s Outer/Space, Dublin Arts Council with OhioDance and The Ohio State University, and the Taft School. Kloppenberg’s choreography has been shown at venues such as Movement Research at the Judson Church, Dance Space Center (now DNA), Jose Mateo Ballet Theater, Jennifer Muller/the Works, Green Street Studios’, Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, Rebound Dance Festival, Bates College, Colby College, FAB, MDF, The 92^nd St. Y, Provincetown Dance Festival, and Exit Dance Theater/Boston Dance Alliance among others.

Annie has performed in works by Bebe Miller, Headlong Dance Theater, Kathleen Hermsdorf, Rachel Boggia, Sara Pearson & Patrik Widrig, Shani Collins, Rebecca Rice, Penny Campbell, Prometheus Dance, Cathy Young, Heidi Henderson, Karl Rogers, Meghan Sprenger, Annie Bessera, Ashley Thorndike, Elisha Clark-Halpin, Yen Fang Yu, and Katherine Ferrier as well as in repertory projects by Miller, David Dorfman, Tere O’Connor, and Gabe Masson. Annie has been deeply influenced by her improvisational studies with Bebe Miller, Kathleen Hermsdorf, Penny Campbell, Michael Chorney, Peter Schmitz, Nik Haffner (of The Forsythe Company), and The Architects (Lisa Gonzales, Katherine Ferrier, Jennifer Kayle, Pam Vail).

Annie holds an MFA from The Ohio State University and a BA from Middlebury College. She currently serves on the Board of the American College Dance Association (http://www.acda.dance/) and the Advisory Council for Now and Next Dance Mentoring Project (http://www.nownextdance.org/) and is a past Board Member of Green Street Studios (http://greenstreetstudios.org/). Awards include scholarships to multiple professional development programs and workshops, research and course development grants from Colby College and The Mellon Foundation, Massachusetts Cultural Council, Cambridge Council for the Arts, Choreographic Fellowships and Residency Support, and Alumni Grants and Special Project Support from The Ohio State University.
