Roger Adkins serves as the Director of Global Education and is part of the team at DavisConnects.
Roger has been in the field of global learning for more than two decades and has experience managing study abroad programming, domestic off-campus study programming, international student and scholar services and programming, English language learners/multilingual learners programming (including courses), global engagement certification programs, domestic and international program sites and teams, Globally Networked Learning (GNL)/Cooperative Online Intercultural Learning (COIL) programming, faculty and staff development in global learning, and global learning on campus – both across the curriculum and in co-curricular settings.
Before joining the DavisConnects team at Colby, Roger held similar positions at Earlham College and Gustavus Adolphus College. They also served briefly as a Consultant to the Director of International Education at Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and they began their career in the field as a graduate assistant, then program coordinator, then assistant director, and then associate director in Study Abroad Programs at the University of Oregon.
Roger holds both a Ph.D. and M.A. in comparative literature, an M.A. in gender studies, and a B.A. in English and creative writing (the latter from Hiram College). They are actively engaged in research both in the field of global learning and in the academic fields of literary and cultural studies, folklore, and gender studies. They are currently working on a book chapter about using decolonizing approaches in short, faculty-led programs that they have led in the United Kingdom. They have also taught courses in first-year writing, Nordic studies, comparative literature, folklore, and English as well as professionalization courses including pre- and post-experience courses for study abroad, internships, independent studies, and foundations for success in fellowships. Roger has led four instances of a UK-based program addressing fantasy literature, folklore, and social justice issues.
