Research Interests
My interests include microbial interactions with metals, biochemical processes sustaining microbial life on early Earth, and understanding how metals impact gut microbiomes. My lab primarily investigates microbial interactions with selenium, arsenic and/or iron and we are always on the hunt to isolate novel microbes from different ecosystems. Current studies investigate the enzymology of microbial metal respiration, how microbes sense and react to (toxic) elements in an environment, and what happens to selenium in the gut enivironment because selenium is a required trace nutrient for life.
