Personal Information
Susan McIlvaine Kenney was born in New Jersey and spent her childhood in Pennsylvania, Ohio and central New York State. She graduated from Northwestern University Phi Beta Kappa with a B.A. and honors in English Literature and Creative Writing, and earned a Ph.D. in English and American and Medieval Literature from Cornell University. After three decades of teaching literature and fiction writing at Colby College she retired as the Charles A. Dana Professor of Creative Writing Emeritus. She lives in Maine with her husband, also a retired Colby professor.
Susan is the author of the novels In Another Country and Sailing as well as three Roz Howard mysteries, Garden Of Malice, Graves In Academe, and One Fell Sloop. Her short story “Facing Front” was chosen for first place in the 1982 Prize Stories: The O. Henry Awards, and her novel In Another Country won the Quality Paperback Book Club New Voices Award in 1984. Her essays and short stories have appeared in Epoch, The Hudson Review, McCall’s, Ladies Home Journal, Redbook, and The Boston Globe Magazine, as well as several anthologies. She has written numerous reviews for The New York Times Book Review and the Boston Globe, Newsday, and Down East Magazine. Her most recent works in progress are a novella “The Bride Stands Still for the Wedding,” currently in circulation, and “The Opening,” a sequel to her novella, “Escape.” Also in progress are a mystery novella ”the Moped Murders.” and a full length Roz Howard mystery novel tentatively entitled A Leprous Distilment.
