Colby Internship in London
Colby Theater and Dance/Old Vic New Voices Internship
The Colby Theater & Dance Department is happy to announce the creation of an exciting new internship program with the world-renowned Old Vic Theater in London. Beginning in January 2011, Colby theater and dance students will have the opportunity to work side-by-side with the staff at the Old Vic’s New Voices program while they are studying abroad in London. The OVNV program, under the leadership of Old Vic Artistic Director Kevin Spacey and OVNV Head Steve Winter, aims to support emerging talent, inspire young people and open up The Old Vic Theatre to new and diverse audiences. The work of OVNV is broken down into six strands: OVNV Education (in-school thematic workshops, theatre-based practice and young leadership covering 75 schools and 2,250 children); OVNV Community (an annual project involving over 120 diverse members of the local community in a large-scale community-based production); OVNV Club, Associates & Network (a program for emerging talent aged 18 – 30, supporting young actors, writers, directors and producers in London and New York) and OVNV Online (a major new project designed to give performance opportunities to our online community).
Colby interns will support the whole department of OVNV across all six strands. Tailored by the student in consultation with OVNV staff, this could be a combination of administrative and practical work designed to give the student strong insight into how projects are created and facilitated. Colby interns are considered vital members of the team, helping make all the projects happen. They work closely with each member of the department, and also have the opportunity to speak to other members of the Old Vic about their job roles.
The nature and scope of the Colby Theater and Dance/Old Vic New Voices Internship is in keeping with the liberal arts mission (and spirit) at Colby, in which professional skills are honed through service learning activities that require a combination of problem solving, collaboration, critical thinking and communication. The goal of this exciting new internship program is to provide Colby College Theater and Dance students with meaningful exposure to a variety of performance-based outreach and education work in a state-of-the-art professional theater environment.
