This week’s highlight focuses on the continuance of Poetry Month this April.
Colby’s Digital Collections is proud to feature a newly launched version of the Bern Porter Collection.
The Bern Porter Collection of Contemporary Letters is a mix of published and unpublished materials reflecting Porter’s life and work. It features decades of items that Porter added until his death in 2004. The collection includes small press items including books, mail art, newspapers, etc. It even features rarer, unpublished items such as correspondence between Porter and his contemporaries, as well as other artworks and scrapbooks. A small portion of the collection details part of his childhood in Maine.
While Porter’s eccentric life and eclectic work outstrip the simple label “poet,” he is well known as a progenitor of “found poetry.” This work is currently on display at the Colby College Museum of Art alongside the work of Terry Winters.
This Saturday, April 11th, the museum is featuring at “Community Day: The Art of the Book” beginning at 10am, with a reading of select poems by Bern Porter at 1:15pm.
