A slideshow from first semester finds students immersed in classes, relishing campus events, enjoying quality time with friends and families, and basking in the beauty of Mayflower Hill. Stroll through 20 images and see how gorgeous Mayflower Hill is, whether festooned in fall foliage or made even more scenic by snow.
Fall leaves line the academic quad and frame Miller Library. The library is such a popular camera target that Instagrammers use the hashtag #millergram. Erin Maguire ’15 handles the ball in a field hockey game versus University of Maine Farmington. Sarah Carrigan ’16 bites into an apple during a Colby-sponsored outing to the Apple Farm in Fairfield. Students smile for the camera as they head to class. Assistant Professor of American Studies Ben Lisle engages students in the course Space, Place, and New York City. Students confer on the library steps before class. Students listen intently to Professor Adrian Blevins in her course Intro to Poetry. Members of the Colby athletics fan club, the Mule Mob, bring the noise in Alfond Stadium. Assistant Professor of Physics and Astronomy Dale Kocevski works at the blackboard in his course Electricity and Magnetism. John Baron ’18 tests his vertical game during warm-ups before the Mules beat the Hamilton Continentals in October. Gibson Professor of History Elizabeth Leonard leads a discussion in her American Women's History course. The spire on Miller Library is topped by a weathervane depicting the sloop Hero—the ship that carried Colby’s founder from Boston to the Kennebec River to start the school. A family converses on the academic quad during Family Homecoming Weekend. Osman Bah ’16 listens to an alumni panel during the Career Center’s annual "Paving the Road to a Future in Finance," a day-long event at Fidelity Investments. Students travel to Boston to meet with financial professionals, practice interviewing skills, and learn about career opportunities. While judging the Halloween costume contest at the Colby College Museum of Art, President David A. Greene shakes the hand of a student dressed as Bob Ross. The International Food Festival, a popular event each fall, brings together faculty, students, and staff for a cross-cultural culinary experience in Foss dining hall. Kelvin Lui ’15, Gillian Wei ’18, Stephanie Ng ’18, and Lucas Lam ’17 made curry fish balls, a popular street food in Hong Kong, to share during the annual International Food Festival. Warm air over early-season snow shrouds the symmetry of the academic quad in fog. Students gather in Cotter Union for coffee, studies, and quality time. Snow arrived early, catching birches and willows along Johnson Pond with leaves intact. Come January the foliage will be gone and the pond frozen in time for skating and broomball.
