Colby owns 10 acres including 450 feet of lakefront on Messalonskee Lake seven miles from the campus. Students have full access to facilities including a picnic area with charcoal grills, a small beach for swimming, croquet, horseshoes, and two small bath/changing houses. A woodworking shop and blacksmith’s forge are used mainly for Jan Plan courses, and a boathouse is used by varsity crew teams to store rowing shells.
The Quarry Road Recreation Area, located within walking distance of campus, offers six miles of groomed cross-country ski trails, including an FIS-certified race course, all with snowmaking capability. Colby’s Nordic ski team competes and practices on the trails during the winter, and students can take advantage of the recreation area year-round for skiing, snowshoeing, hiking, running, biking, and rock climbing.
