Batteries

  • Alkaline batteries do not contain hazardous heavy metals and can be thrown in the trash.
  • Non-alkaline batteries can be brought to a collection receptacle in the Colby Bookstore sponsored by EnviroCo. or to Staples.
    • Which Batteries to Recycle:
      • Lithium (laptop and cell phone)
      • Lithium ion
      • Mercury
      • Nickel-cadmium
      • Sealed lead
      • Lead acid
      • Any rechargeable batteries
    • Battery Sources:
      • Cameras
      • Watches
      • Laptop computers
      • Cell phones
  • The energy required to create batteries is over 500 times the energy they provide. Toxic materials are used to make some types of batteries. Those batteries should be disposed of properly. When batteries are needed, use rechargeable types and then bring them to a collection receptacle for proper disposal.

Toner Cartridges

  • Colby Academic and Administrative Printers
    • Toner cartridges are purchased through Office Max, Colby’s Office Supply provider.  These cartridges can be recycled by mailing them back to the company. Used products are recycled and recovered into raw materials for other industrial uses.  When you need to recycle your HP printing supplies, just follow the simple directions listed in the instruction brochure (includes UPS mailing label).
  • Personal/Student Printing Supplies:
    • Students who purchase HP printer supplies can also use the recycling program described above.
    • Free postage-paid envelopes are provided by the student organization Enviro Co. to recycle empty INK JET cartridges.  These mailers are available from the ES Program Coordinator Beth Kopp.
    • Alternatively, cartridges can be brought to a collection facility such as Staples for recycling.

Computers

  • Colby Computers:
    • Some older computer models are donated to local schools that send staff members to Colby to look over the available equipment and choose what is appropriate for their programs.
    • Most computers are shipped to a professional disposal firm that dismantles, retrieves, and disposes of hazardous chemicals and metals within the computer shell.
  • Personal Student Computers:
    • Bring computer to a retail store that recycles computers.
