JOEL LARUE SMITH – Pianist/Composer/Producer/Educator
Joel LaRue Smith has toured extensively, performing jazz, classical, gospel and Afro Cuban repertoire, throughout the U.S., Europe, Africa, Asia, Central America, and the Caribbean.
His latest recording projects are a solo jazz piano CD, “Jazz Sketches and Portraits”, and a trio CD, “Testimony”, both due to be released in November 2023.
His debut CD, “September’s Child”, features seven original Afro-Cuban Jazz compositions. His March 2017 CD, “The Motorman’s Son” has been described in Downbeat magazine as an “Afro- Caribbean masterpiece”, and “a vibrant, powerful and hard-grooving release”.
He has won the distinguished George and Ira Gershwin Award from ASCAP. Joel was the 2022 Inaugural Artist in Residence for the Tufts in Talloires Program. Smith is the recipient of the 2019, Boston Foundation, Live Arts Boston Grant, Massachusetts Cultural Council 2017 Artist Fellowship Program Finalist Award in Music Composition, and six “Meet the Composer” grants.
