Colby Libraries offer expert guidance, resources, and services to support student’s use and engagement with a broad range of information resources. Farnham Writers’ Center
The Farnham Writers’ Center works with Colby students, faculty, and staff on all aspects of writing.
Program for Academic Success and Transformative Learning (PASTL)
PASTL strives to empower students to embrace the challenges, risks, iterative nature, and joys of learning through co-curricular experiences that blend peer collaboration and expert guidance.
Drop-in Supports
- Structured Study Sessions
- Trained Learning Assistants facilitate structured, quiet study sessions. Students can arrive on the hour as needed, or stay for the full session. Hosted by the Program for Academic Success and Transformative Learning. Click for times and locations [link TBD].
- Study Hours
- Space to study, with a Class Deans’ assistant facilitating. Click link for times and location.
- Farnham Writers’ Center (FWC)
- Located in Miller 206 (on the second floor of the library). Unless tutors are already booked, students can get help with their writing at any stage of the writing process via a drop-in visit to the FWC. Click link for specific hours.
Consultations
- Colby Libraries Research Support
- Meet with research specialists who can help you identify, locate, and evaluate scholarly and non-scholarly materials for assignments, refine your research question, cite sources properly and use a range of research tools. Support also includes unique projects, from working with primary source materials to creating and managing novel datasets.
- Farnham Writers’ Center (FWS)
- Located in Miller 206 (on the second floor of the library). The FWC is devoted to supporting student writers at any stage of the writing process– from ideas to full drafts. You can schedule a one-hour consultation with a trained FWC tutor here.
- Class Dean Drop-in Hours
- Sophomores and seniors can ask their class dean any questions that they have. See the Deans’ website for more info.
- “Advise the Dean” Lunch Events
- Various lunchtime events over the semester in the Spa. An opportunity to get free pizza if you check in to advise your Class Dean on what students need. Check ColbyNow frequently to know when the next such event takes place.
Course-Specific Supports
- Learning Assistant (LA) Drop-in Hours
- Days, times, places are specific to each LA course. For any course that employs Learning Assistants, there will be sessions offered outside of class time. For more information, consult the syllabus of any course which has an LA, or ask your LA or course instructor. More info on the LA program found here.
- Teaching Assistants (TAs)
- Many courses utilize TAs who may offer time outside of class to support your learning in a particular course. For more information, consult the syllabus of any course which has an TA, or ask your TA or course instructor.
- Language Tables
- For any language, there is a weekly “language table” that allows students to practice speaking in that language with professors and others fluent in the language. For more information, consult the syllabus of your language course, or ask the course instructor or language assistant.
- Chem Help Center
- Study help for students taking any chemistry course. Find more information here [link TBD].
- Writing Fellows
- The Writing Fellows Program, a service of the FWC, embeds trained writing tutors into writing-intensive classes to support student writing in that course
- Learning Consultants
- For students who are concerned about their academic performance, especially in terms of scheduling their time efficiently, the Deans’ office can connect them with a learning consultant. Contact the Deans for more information.
- Subject Experts and Guides
- Subject guides help you locate key resources and connect with subject experts in your field. They provide curated lists of databases, journals, books, and research tools to support your coursework and projects. Need more help? Contact a subject librarian for personalized guidance!

Yes! Colby Libraries offer research support through subject librarians and online guides. We can help you find and evaluate sources, navigate databases, and cite your work properly. Stop by the library, explore our subject guides, or Ask Us for personalized help!

If you show up early, or your tutor is finishing up a previous session, please have a seat and enjoy our newly renovated, collaborative space.
- A completed draft if you have one
- One or two main issues that you want to address during the session
- Assignment prompts, guidelines, or any requirements from your professor
- Anything else you think might be helpful: outlines, supplemental reading, class notes, prior assignments, previous drafts, rough drafts, lab results
